Strange Things Can Happen On Holiday ! Do You Think Slugs And Snails Are A Delicasey?

In 1988 we decided the kids were old enough to leave at home while we holidayed on our own. So, with just a tiny bit of trepidation on my part, hubby and I set off for Crete. Ten years earlier this had been the destination of our first family holiday abroad. In those days Crete was unspoiled by us tourists. A meal out consisted of Greek food – very simple – and the bill, including wine, cost about a fiver. We fell in love with the Cretans, who welcomed kids with open arms. The shopkeepers would give the chilren pieces of fruit and the waiters made such a fuss of them.

I’ll never forget the first night. In those days there was no air con, or if there was it was beyond our reach financially. While the kids slept blissfully we sweated the night through, only to discover in the morning that the previous tenants had left the cooker on – so everything was more comfortable henceforth! To us it was paradise; we could walk through the olive groves across the road down to the beach. It was pretty much secluded and we’d never exprerienced anything like it before. If we went into the town we caught the bus, which belted out Greek music – so much better than the English pop that they think we Brits seem to require these days.

So, ten years on we set off without the children. We stayed in a different part of Crete, and we hired a car for a few days.

One day we’d been up in the mountains and on our way back to the apartment saw a very frail looking old lady by the roadside. I can’t remember now if she was thumbing a lift. All I do recall is her sitting in the rear of the car while we took her back to the village . She spoke little English, why should she? And we spoke even less Greek. We became conscious of a rustling noise and somehow she managed to communicate to us that she’d been gathering snails. This little old lady had apparently spent hours gathering these delicacies to trade to the local restaurants. We could not believe it. And when we dropped her off, bless her, she thrust some coins towards us, which of course we did not accept. I have never felt quite so humbled in my life.

At the end of the holiday we had the usual trials and tribulations but I never forgot that lady.

We are so lucky. We do not even have to suffer any inconvenience any more when going abroad. That is because we go via Star Parking Heathrow family parking and all we have to do is turn up at the airport and leave everything to them. And no matter what time we return, there they are waiting for us with the car. Star Parking the only Meet and Greet parking Heathrow company to use.

Tips On Buying Abroad

Tips on Buying abroad

Do you purchase things on your travels? We do, and we now have a couple of tips for shopping abroad. Sometimes whenever you travel, you will have an impulse to purchase souvenirs… to… well… to do just what souvenir means… to remember your trip.

We’re not talking t-shirts here… we’re talking articles that will bring back memories of that city or country. We’re talking about tips for shopping abroad for regular old tourists.
You’re not likely to get the best “deals” or the top “stuff” unless you simply get really lucky, but you will get some fun things and fun memories of finding them.

Purchasing art while on vacation often is a good way to add some excitement to your trip. Think of all the fun that may be had searching out that special piece that can bring back the memory of blue seas, snow-capped mountains, a memorable ruin, or tropical birds.

Each travel destination you visit is bound to have a definite flavor that can be captured in artwork or crafts that are unique to the area. Your souvenir could be a painting or it can be fabric, woven panels, embroidered work, or batik.

You can buy native works of art like wood sculptures and masks. We’ve brought home unique musical instruments… a balalaika, a Tibetan horn, a didgeridoo, and some drums.

It’s fun searching for a little antique piece or some ethnic clothing, but no matter what you go looking for, there are some tips for shopping abroad that you need to keep in mind.

If you are going to look for something specific on a trip, do a little research before you leave home so that you know about how much you need to expect to pay for it.

Also do research so you know how to judge the quality. There are many fakes and cheap knockoffs in existence, a bit of knowledge may enable you to avoid getting ripped off… though with many items, even experts could be fooled!

Assume what you’re getting isn’t old or authentic…. that’s it’s made new for tourists and made to seem old…. That’s not all bad, many countries won’t let you take antiques out of the country anyway.
For anything you buy, we think if you pay a price you are able to live with, assuming it is just a present and not a valuable treasure, you will be happy with it whether it’s new or old.

While it’s fun to say you purchased this in…. you name it… Europe, Africa, Asia… Give it some thought before you buy. Can you get the same thing at home…. and get it cheaper without the hassles of getting it home? Will you really use it? Display it? Or is this an impulse that’s a good idea when you’re in that small shop, but something which may end up collecting dust in a box or within your closet?

Sometimes to “get over” that impulse to purchase, we just buy some little thing which may remind us of this trip… things that lay flat and pack easily… handcrafted cards and cloth items or little pieces of inexpensive jewelry. When all else fails, we buy what we call “tacky tourist curios”. Funny little pieces that we bring home and hang on our Christmas tree.

I suppose that’s our best tip for shopping abroad… really give it some thought before you buy it.

So will this holiday be able to reach the top of most sought after holidays, above Egypt? Egypt has much past and culture to offer everyone, it is just a case of whether or not the holiday experience is better?

So what about Maldives Holidays? Well these are a great contender to Caribbean holidays and Caribbean holidays. Maybe not because of the land that they hold, but because of the water that surrounds them. The Maldives doesn’t have much in the way of land, but it does have probably the clearest seas in the world.

These seas offer us as tourists the perfect diving capability, the whale sharks are a great tourist pull and the surrounding wildlife is great fun.
