Barcelona, The Gracia District, An Authentic One

I’ll say it’s my fave district because it’s been able to keep a lot of its customs and parties with a powerful Catalan spirit. It is very “alive” and everything can be found in there, including many life-changing Barcelona Apartments. Prior to it being a tiny village but in 1897, it’s been integrated to join the city and it modified from village to district.

Shops are mainly found at Gran de Gracia Street and I like to walk in Verdi Street where I can find restaurants, bars, shops, movies in their original language, supermarkets… In spite that there are numerous places like Plaza del Sol, Plaza del Diamante… I only prefer 2 – Plaza de la Virreina and Plaza de Rius i Taulet.

The 1st one as it is close to a bar at Santa Creu Street ( there’s just one so if you’d like to go, you cannot miss it ) where I am going frequently to take my tea and during summer time or bright day, I am able to drink a Coke by seating on one of the patios and enjoy the heat. The second one is a handy place to eat encircled by trees and in the middle, a clock tower in front of the mayor of Gracia thereby giving it a kind of charm. Often concerts are organized in both places.

The other streets where I will go to purchase things are Via Augusta, Travessera de Gracia and Asturies streets. Naturally there are several more like Balin, Corsega… But those are the ones I go often and with that, it is sufficient to find what i need.

One of the finest theatre theater Bosque ( rambla de prat ) is located in this district because it isn’t simple to get a good place to observe a production with nice surroundings and a huge screen, although it is only in Spanish. For folks who don’t master the language, they can go to Verdi theatre to look at them in their original language but they don’t put smash films – just one time I saw that they didn’t respect their rule which was for The Matrix!!!

It’s not simple to walk and even local people get lost in this area. Fortunately for me, when I arrived at Barcelona in 2k, my first residence was in this district so I learned quickly its secret and now I can go without the help of a map!!!

The Passeig de Sant Joan is the best place for me to skate but only between Avinguda Diagonal and Travessera de Gracia because the center is a pedestrian section, I just have to try to not fall on someone!!!

The Less Gaudi Side of Barcelona – El Rey De La Magia Magic Shop

So much has been written about Antoni Gaudi and his association with Barcelona it’s almost inconceivable to venture to that pearl of the Mediterranean without at least spending some time admiring the slinky extravagances of the architect’s whimsical imagination. But Barcelona is full of unusual shops, bars and cafes that’ve been going about their business since before Sr. Gaudi picked up his first pencil. There are also tons of great Barcelona Apartment Rentals to explore the city just like the great designer used to.

At number eleven Carrer de la Princesa, a painted be-turbaned head glares out from the curve of a large blue query mark. Below it a glass display case holds playing cards, puzzles, wands and intricate explanations of the illusionist’s art. This is El Rey De La Magia, founded in 1881 and the oldest wizardry shop in Spain.

Just before Gaudi started work on the Segrada Familia, Joaquin Portagas became delighted with the arena of illusion. After a trip to South America where he learned some new tricks and strategies, he decided to take a full-time step into the magic world and opened El Rey de la Magia, a brave step at a time when just a few folk understood and practiced the illusionist’s art. At that point magic was mainly performed on street corners, in markets and bars – it would not become really popular until the 1930′s, when it eventually entered the theatres and became a major pursuit.

In the store, and the little museum of sorcery nearby, posters going back to the early years of the previous century advertise the famous sorcerers of the day, several them dressed in flowing Chinese robes. The bright costumes were seen as awfully exotic when they first appeared, and besides – there was lots of space to hide things!

In 1933 the first wizardry group in Spain was started in Barcelona, the Asociacin Catalana Illusionistas – and met in Quatro Gats, the same caf where Picasso, Joan Mir and other artists, writers and poets would meet. Magic was seen by many as an element of the humanities in those days.

By the point Jos Maria Martinez took over the shop the wizardry business had been in decline for numerous years – there was even talk of converting the property into a bar. At that point he and his spouse, Rosa Maria Llop, were professional actors but included sorcery in their specially produced performances, something they do today.

Sorcery is now a very popular spare time interest again, and even though the general public quite like the very grand David Copperfield-type illusions, it’s still the close-up, more intimate stage performances that folks actually like. And you aren’t getting much more close-up and intimate than the performances held at their tiny theatre, where babes to gramps goggle in awe at the ‘magical ‘ sunday shows. Why not rent some Apartments in Barcelona to practice your own sorcery tricks in the city?

The theatre is a component of a museum of historical magic props ( where you can see Rosa’s grinning head mysteriously suspended in a glass case ), but in the workshop below, Jos Maria works creating new tricks for customers worldwide, though in the world of wizardry nothing actually changes.

Basically magic is defined by one or two rules – levitation, changing colour, shape or place, and breaking something apart and putting it together again. Regardless of whether you are cutting someone’s head off you still have to put it back again or where’s the wizardry? There is not – it’s then known as murder!

The most important thing in magic is creating the truth of something that does not exist. That comes down to technique, you want to focus the public’s attention where you want it. One of the most difficult illusions to do is levitation because it needs approximately 4 mins to set up, in full public view, and four mins is a really long time for a magician to stand on stage and do nothing.
