Strange Things Can Happen On Holiday ! Do You Think Slugs And Snails Are A Delicasey?
In 1988 we decided the kids were old enough to leave at home while we holidayed on our own. So, with just a tiny bit of trepidation on my part, hubby and I set off for Crete. Ten years earlier this had been the destination of our first family holiday abroad. In those days Crete was unspoiled by us tourists. A meal out consisted of Greek food – very simple – and the bill, including wine, cost about a fiver. We fell in love with the Cretans, who welcomed kids with open arms. The shopkeepers would give the chilren pieces of fruit and the waiters made such a fuss of them.
I’ll never forget the first night. In those days there was no air con, or if there was it was beyond our reach financially. While the kids slept blissfully we sweated the night through, only to discover in the morning that the previous tenants had left the cooker on – so everything was more comfortable henceforth! To us it was paradise; we could walk through the olive groves across the road down to the beach. It was pretty much secluded and we’d never exprerienced anything like it before. If we went into the town we caught the bus, which belted out Greek music – so much better than the English pop that they think we Brits seem to require these days.
So, ten years on we set off without the children. We stayed in a different part of Crete, and we hired a car for a few days.
One day we’d been up in the mountains and on our way back to the apartment saw a very frail looking old lady by the roadside. I can’t remember now if she was thumbing a lift. All I do recall is her sitting in the rear of the car while we took her back to the village . She spoke little English, why should she? And we spoke even less Greek. We became conscious of a rustling noise and somehow she managed to communicate to us that she’d been gathering snails. This little old lady had apparently spent hours gathering these delicacies to trade to the local restaurants. We could not believe it. And when we dropped her off, bless her, she thrust some coins towards us, which of course we did not accept. I have never felt quite so humbled in my life.
At the end of the holiday we had the usual trials and tribulations but I never forgot that lady.
We are so lucky. We do not even have to suffer any inconvenience any more when going abroad. That is because we go via Star Parking Heathrow family parking and all we have to do is turn up at the airport and leave everything to them. And no matter what time we return, there they are waiting for us with the car. Star Parking the only Meet and Greet parking Heathrow company to use.
